Term Definition
ADSL

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line is where the upload speed is different from the download speed. Usually the download speed is much greater.

Applet

Small programs used on a web page to operate a specific function.

Application

Any program designed to perform a specific function directly for the user or, in some cases, for another application program. See Software

ASCII

American Standard Code for Information Interchange is the internationally adopted standard for the code numbers used by computers to represent all the upper and lower case letters, numbers, punctuation marks, symbols, and control codes.

Attachment

A file which is attached to and sent with an e-mail message.

Back up

To make a duplicate but separately stored copy of the contents of a computer-held data set, software application, or individual files. Back-ups should be done regularly.

Bandwidth

How much data you can send through a connection or channel at one time. Usually measured in bits-per-second (bps).

Bit

Contraction of Binary digIT. The smallest unit of computerized data, equal to either of the digits 0 or 1, called binary because it has only two values, on or off.

Blog

A blog (weBLOG)is basically a journal that is available on the web. Blogs are typically updated using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog.

bps

Bits Per Second is a measurement of how fast data is moved from one place to another.

Broadband

Is informally used to mean ‘faster than common networks’, and so the actual meaning depends on what is common at the time.

Browser

A piece of software used to search and retrieve information from the world wide web. Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer are examples of browsers.

Byte

A set of Bits that represent a single character.

Cache

Temporary memory used to access frequently used instructions, thus speeding up processing time. Also denotes temporary storage of world wide web pages by browser software.

Case

A software’s inability to construe between upper and lower case versions of a letter as representing the same letter.
